She illustrated other writers' work, including Noel Streatfeild, Alison Uttley, Ian Seraillier, Margaret Mahy and notably Dorothy Edwards's \u003ci\u003eMy Naughty Little Sister\u003c\/i\u003e series.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eShirley began to write and draw her own picture books when her children were young. Her first book - \u003ci\u003eLucy and Tom's Day\u003c\/i\u003e - was published in 1960, and she followed it with, among others, \u003ci\u003eDogger \u003c\/i\u003eand the \u003ci\u003eAlfie \u003c\/i\u003eseries.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eShirley Hughes has won the Other Award, the Eleanor Farjeon Award, and the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration twice, for \u003ci\u003eDogger \u003c\/i\u003ein 1977 and for \u003ci\u003eElla's Big Chance \u003c\/i\u003ein 2003. In 2007 \u003ci\u003eDogger was\u003c\/i\u003e voted the public's favourite Greenaway winner of all time. Shirley received an OBE in 1999 for services to Children's Literature, and a CBE in 2017.
